Great question! Note making is a critical part of the study process, especially for students in Year 11 and 12. Simply reading textbooks or PowerPoint slides isn’t enough for true understanding and memory retention. Here's why all students should focus on making their own notes:

1. Enhances Understanding: Numerous studies confirm that note-making forces students to actively engage with the material, deepening their understanding. Paraphrasing key concepts in their own words ensures they grasp the content better, as it prevents glossing over or skipping difficult topics.

2. Boosts Memory Retention: Research shows that understanding a concept is key to long-term memory retention. Students who take notes are more likely to remember the material compared to those who rely on rote memorisation (Bohay et al., 2011). When students actively process information, it’s easier for them to retain it in the long run.

3. Improves Exam Performance: The combination of enhanced understanding and better memory means that students who make notes perform better in exams. By turning study material into their own words, they’re better prepared for assessments.
