Hi Robert, thanks for the question. Managing time effectively when a child has multiple exams in the same week can be overwhelming. During Year 12, it's common for students to face 2 to 3 exams in one week, which adds significant pressure. Let us walk you through the best strategies to help your child manage their study time and maximise their exam performance.
The Challenge of Multiple Exams
Students often face the dilemma of balancing multiple exams within a short time frame. Many students try to prepare sequentially for each exam, giving more time to the first exam and less to the last. However, this approach has its limitations. To prevent this, some students may choose to tackle the last exam first, ensuring they have more time for the later subjects. Both these strategies have their risks, so we'd always suggest consistent work across the year instead.
Our Advice: Start Early & Prepare for All Exams Simultaneously
Ideally, students should begin preparing at least 3 weeks before minor exams, and even earlier for major exams like the HSC Trials or final exams in October. By the Sunday before exam week, students should be fully prepared for all exams, leaving the exam week for additional practice exams and focusing on maintaining good rest.
If students start early enough and balance their preparation, they don't need to resort to hacks or last-minute cramming. Preparing for all exams simultaneously is a more sustainable strategy, ensuring comprehensive knowledge retention and reducing stress during exam week.
Effective Project Planning for Exam Success
Starting early and managing time efficiently is key to success. Planning study schedules with plenty of time to review and practise can ensure your child feels ready and confident for each exam. Our Crash Courses on Exam Preparation and Exam Planners provide detailed steps for planning and optimising study time to prevent burnout and last-minute stress.
